# Telemetry

Graphiti collects anonymous initialization telemetry.

## Data that Graphiti collects

When you initialize a Graphiti instance, Graphiti sends:

* An anonymous UUID stored in `~/.cache/graphiti/telemetry_anon_id`.
* The installed Graphiti version.
* The machine architecture that `platform.machine()` returns.
* Provider labels for the LLM, database, embedder, and reranker. Graphiti
  infers these labels from the client and driver class names. Azure OpenAI
  classes report the `openai` label because their class names contain
  `openai`. An unrecognized custom class reports the `unknown` label.

## Data that Graphiti does not collect

The initialization event does not contain:

* API keys or credentials.
* Episode, node, or edge content.
* Search queries or search results.
* File paths.

## Telemetry source

The [telemetry source](https://github.com/getzep/graphiti/blob/main/graphiti_core/telemetry/telemetry.py)
defines the event and its properties.

## Disable telemetry

Telemetry is enabled by default. Set the environment variable before you
initialize Graphiti:

```bash
export GRAPHITI_TELEMETRY_ENABLED=false
```

You can also set the variable for a Python process:

```python
import os
os.environ['GRAPHITI_TELEMETRY_ENABLED'] = 'false'
from graphiti_core import Graphiti
graphiti = Graphiti(...)
```

Graphiti disables telemetry when it detects `pytest` in the process.

## Technical details

* Graphiti sends telemetry through PostHog.
* Graphiti ignores telemetry errors.
* Graphiti does not interrupt the application when telemetry fails.
